Lease a Bike and Volkswagen Financial Services celebrate one year of successful partnership: Bikes can now also be ordered via online shops and direct sellers

More than 33,000 company bikes leased across the VW Group – Good response at VW FS

Cloppenburg/ Braunschweig, December 5, 2024. Lease a Bike and Volkswagen Financial Services (VW FS) can look back on a successful first year of their bike leasing cooperation! In December 2023, Volkswagen Financial Services teamed up with the company bike leasing provider Lease a Bike to launch bike leasing for employees. Since then, over 800 leased bikes have been handed over to company staff. Even more impressive: the colleagues at Volkswagen AG have leased almost 17,000 bikes, and across the Group as a whole, a total of around 33,000 bikes were leased by the employees at 25 Volkswagen companies. This is far more than initially expected for the first year.

The special feature of the employee offer: Group employees can lease up to four bicycles or e-bikes. Interestingly, more than 70 percent of the lessees opted for a single bike, while the others leased several bikes at once. And in terms of popularity, e-bikes clearly dominate – more than 86 percent of the leased bikes are e-models.

Background: Volkswagen Financial Services hold a 49 percent stake in Lease a Bike. The leasing offer itself demonstrates not only the success of the sustainable mobility initiative within the Group but also VW FS's commitment to environmentally friendly solutions and promoting healthy, flexible mobility options for its employees.

Expansion of procurement options in the second year of cooperation and a look ahead

And it gets even better: with immediate effect, Lease a Bike is expanding the bike leasing options for VW FS employees. They can now also obtain their bikes directly from online retailers or direct sellers, which has not been possible before. A corresponding protocol note to the in-company agreement on bike leasing has been concluded with the Works Council. The dealers are listed in the Lease a Bike portal, which now offers an even wider selection.

Lease a Bike and Volkswagen Financial Services plan to further intensify their successful cooperation and open up new markets. The goal remains clear: to provide more people with access to climate-friendly supplementary mobility and to encourage greater use of bikes of all kinds.

Attractive conditions and sustainable mobility offers for employees

With its innovative leasing model, Lease a Bike has been able to win over many other customers beyond the Volkswagen Group in 2024. "Our unique service, personalized solutions and innovative processes have convinced them. We are especially proud of our partnership with Volkswagen and the opportunity to provide state-of-the-art leasing models and sustainable mobility options to employees," said Christian Wölbern, General Manager at Lease a Bike.

The figures for the VW Group (Germany) at a glance:

  • 25 participating companies from the Volkswagen Group
  • Approx. 33,000 bikes are currently leased Group-wide to approx. 232,700 eligible employees.
  • 85% of these are e-bikes.
  • Approx. 72% of users lease one bike, approx. 27% lease two bikes, approx. 1% lease three or more bikes.

6 The specified consumption and emission values were obtained according to the legally required measurement procedures. On January 1, 2022, the WLTP (Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure) test cycle completely replaced the NEDC (New European Driving Cycle) test cycle and therefore no NEDC values are avail-able for new type-approved vehicles after that date.
The specifications do not refer to an individual vehicle and are not part of the offer, but serve only to permit com-parison between the individual vehicle types. Additional equipment and accessories (additional components, tire formats, etc.) can alter relevant vehicle parameters such as weight, rolling resistance and aerodynamics, affecting the vehicle's fuel consumption, power consumption, CO2 emissions, and driving performance values in addition to weather and traffic conditions and individual driving behavior.
Due to more realistic testing conditions, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions measured according to WLTP will in many cases be higher than the values measured according to NEDC. As a result, the taxation of vehicles may change accordingly as of September 1, 2018. For further information on the differences between WLTP and NEDC, please visit http://www.volkswagen.de/wltp.
Further information on official fuel consumption data and official specific CO2 emissions for new passenger cars can be found in the "Guide to fuel economy, CO2 emissions and power consumption for new passenger car mod-els", which is available free of charge from all sales dealerships and from DAT Deutsche Automobil Treuhand GmbH, Hellmuth-Hirth-Str. 1, 73760 Ostfildern, Germany, and at www.dat.de/co2.
